A human being is not attaining his full heights until he is educated.
Horace Mann
Sadly, even now in the 21st Century many children never get the chance to step inside a classroom.
More than 100 million children are still denied their right to go to school and many of those who do, don't get the opportunity to fulfill their potential due to many factors including poor teaching, lack of facilities/resources and poverty (UNICEF, 2011). Around 11 percent of global primary school children fail to enroll in school and stand little chance of ever doing so. A primary education may be a minimum education, yet 1 in 5 students around the world never even make it that far (UNESCO, 2007). By 2050, an estimated 9.2 billion people will be living on Planet Earth; millions of them will never receive a proper education.
A number of issues arise from the fact that in many countries free education is not provided. This is particularly evident in a number of African countries where fees act as a major barrier for to school attendance with many parents being unable to feed their families never mind paying for their children's education.
Lack of education is a problem in countries all over the world, including in the UK where figures show that the poorest children do much worse at school on average that their better off classmates (Save the Children, 2011).
We at Academics for a Better World want to raise funds through events which will allow us to help improve the education of children all over the world and to make a difference (By Jennifer; Katie and Danielle).
